Residencies for research, artistic creation, and dissemination
Xpances offers artist residencies in Mérida, Yucatán, for local and international artists interested in researching, developing, producing, or exhibiting projects in Mexico. The program provides a flexible framework tailored to the needs of each artistic practice, with the duration, objectives, and activities of each residency defined according to the specific nature of the project.
The residencies are conceived both as spaces for artistic creation and as platforms for professional development. They provide the conditions to deepen artistic research, produce new work, experiment with materials and methodologies, develop ongoing projects, or prepare for future exhibitions and presentations.
A Space to Create and Develop Projects
Located in a house in Mérida’s historic center, the residency offers access to work and shared spaces that encourage concentration, experimentation, and exchange. The facilities include bedrooms with private bathrooms, a swimming pool, an indoor studio, an outdoor studio, and a dedicated space for presentations, meetings, and cultural activities.
The duration of each stay is determined by the needs of the project, with a recommended minimum of one month. This flexibility allows artists to undertake extended research, develop a new body of work, or prepare projects for public presentation.
Exhibition and Circulation
The residency offers the possibility of publicly presenting work developed during the stay through an exhibition at the gallery, depending on the characteristics of each project and the conditions agreed upon.
These presentations help bring visibility to the processes and outcomes of the residency, foster dialogue with diverse audiences, and explore new opportunities for the circulation of artworks. The relationship between research, production, and exhibition is an important dimension of the program, without limiting the creative process to the achievement of an exhibition-ready outcome.
Encounters and Professional Networks
Xpances seeks to facilitate connections with Mérida’s contemporary art scene and expand opportunities for exchange with artists, curators, gallerists, collectors, institutions, and cultural professionals.
Depending on each resident’s interests, the program may include studio visits, professional meetings, conversations, presentations, and networking activities. These experiences provide opportunities to learn about the local art scene, establish professional relationships, and explore potential collaborations and exhibition opportunities in Mexico and elsewhere.
Knowledge Exchange and Institutional Connections
The residency seeks to foster encounters and exchanges with educational spaces, cultural institutions, and artistic communities in the region. Through potential connections with universities, art schools, arts education centers, independent spaces, and other organizations, resident artists may share aspects of their practice through conversations, presentations, lectures, workshops, and other activities, depending on the nature of each project and the opportunities available.
These exchanges aim to encourage dialogue among artists, students, educators, and cultural professionals, supporting the circulation of knowledge, the discovery of new perspectives, and the development of relationships that may continue beyond the residency.
A Residency Tailored to Each Project
Xpances is based on the understanding that every project requires specific conditions. The program therefore combines a professional framework with the flexibility needed to respond to each artist’s interests, pace, and objectives.
More than an isolated period of production, the residency seeks to offer an opportunity to research, create, share knowledge, build connections, and expand the possibilities for the development and circulation of artistic practice.
